Edward Steichen 1879-1973 was an American photographer, painter and art gallery and museum curator He contributed to Vogue, Vanity Fair, Camera Work, and his photos of Paul Poiret's gowns in Art et Decoration are considered the first modern fashion photographs published. His war documentary "The Fighting Lady" won the 1945 Academy Award for best documentary and in February 2006 a print of Steichen's photo "The Pond - Moonlight" sold for $2.9 million U.S dollars at auction, the highest ever for a photograph at the time.

The print appeared to be a colour photograph but in actuality the first colour photo wasn't produced until 1907, to achieve the effect of colour Steichen added light sensitive gums to the paper. Only 3 of these prints exist and each is unique.
